When I was with Thompson and Rose Architects, we designed a new school for the town of Chilmark. The classrooms are arranged around a central outdoor space, and linked by a glass-lined corridor. The composition is like a small version of Thomas Jefferson's design for the University of Virginia, only rendered in the vernacular style of Martha's Vineyard. The form at the head of the quad is a direct homage to the nearby one-room schoolhouse that the new building replaced.
